VIAGE DE AMBROSIO DE MORALES POR ORDEN DEL REY D. PHILIPE II A LOS REINOS DE LEÓN, Y GALICIA Y PRINCIPADO DE ASTURIAS. Felipe II, además de ocuparse del gobierno de dos mundos, dirigir continuas guerras y realizar conquistas en Oriente y Occidente, velaba por las cosas de su reino: el modo con que las iglesias guardaban las reliquias de sus santos, los cuerpos de las personas Reales, los libros de las bibliotecas... Por ello encomendó a su Gabinete la tarea de viajar por su reino en busca de tales cosas para realizar censo y estudio de ellas, siendo Ambrosio de Morales la persona encargada de tal tarea. Cuando Ambrosio se disponía a ir a Santiago de Compostela de romería, para visitar las reliquias del santo, recibió el mandato del rey para que fuese, en Real Comisión, a ver todo lo de Asturias, Reino de León y Galicia, en iglesias y monasterios, con el fin de que le diera razón y certificación de las reliquias, enterramientos Reales y libros antiguos que hallase en todas aquellas tierras; para ello le fue concedida la correspondiente Cédula Real.
